How to Properly Fit Your E-Collar
The E-Collar should sit snugly just below the jawline (not lower on the neck). You should be able to fit two fingers between the collar the neck for a proper fit (more fingers indicate it's too loose, while fewer fingers mean it's too tight).
How to Use Your Electric Dog Collar
Your dog must connect the mild ‘jolt’ from the E-collar with the desired behaviour. Without this association, your dog may become confused about the meaning of the stimulation.
Step One:
First, check the settings on your E-collar to ensure they are suitable for your dog. Start with a very light but noticeable setting, allowing your dog to feel the stimulation without causing pain. The prongs should rest on the skin without pressing into it and should not be covered by matted fur. Make sure your electric dog collar is properly fitted! Start with a low vibration setting and gradually increase it until you find the right level.
Step Two:
Begin training with your dog close by, just a few feet away. Your dog should already understand the command ‘come to me’ (or your chosen recall phrase). Call your dog while pressing the activation button on the E-Collar. Remember, this is a low setting and should not hurt your dog. Release the button once your dog returns to your side. Your dog will learn that the stimulation means he needs to come back to you, and it will stop as soon as he does!
Step Three:
Gradually increase the distance when using the collar. Over time, your dog will associate the vibration of the collar with the recall command and will not depend solely on your voice. Regardless of how you use your E-Collar, it’s essential for your dog to form a connection between the collar and your commands. Activating the collar without this understanding can lead to confusion.
Furniture Example
For example, if you want your dog to get off the furniture, and he knows the ‘down’ command, combine the stimulation from the collar with your command. Once your dog is off the couch, release the button. It’s that simple!
