Tricks for Beginners

Are you new to dog training or have you recently adopted your first dog? We have some fantastic and simple dog tricks perfect for beginners like you! Why not give them a go?

Lure and Reward
The 'lure and reward' method is more of a training technique than a simple dog trick. By holding a treat just in front of your dog's nose, you canlure' them into specific positions, as if their nose is attached to the treat by an invisible string! Once your dog reaches the desired position, reward them with the treat. The easy dog tricks below will utilize this 'lure and reward' approach.

The Dog Stand
The dog stand is likely the simplest trick on this list! The 'lure and reward' technique is essential here, so be patient and take it step by step.

Step One
Raise the treat in front of your dog's nose and slowly lift it off the ground. Your dog's nose should follow the treat. As soon as your dog stands up or reaches the desired height, reward them!

Step Two
Gradually increase the duration your dog remains in the standing position. Keep in mind that this isn't a natural stance, so it will take time for your dog to develop the necessary muscles and balance!

The Dog Crawl
This is another easy trick for beginners! If you’re familiar with the army crawl, this is the canine version!

Step One
Your dog should know the 'down' command. Get them into a down position and hold a treat close to the floor, at their nose level.

Step Two
Begin to lure them forward! Initially, only ask your dog to move a few inches, rewarding them for their success.

Step Three
Gradually increase the distance you ask your dog to crawl over time! At this stage, you can introduce a verbal command or hand signal, ensuring to repeat it each time.

Sit Pretty
Sit Pretty is another charming and easy trick for beginners, and it looks impressive! If your dog is going to beg, why not do it stylishly?

Step One
Using the lure technique, hold a treat next to your dog's nose. Focus on luring with their nose, not their eyes, and slowly raise the treat.

Step Two
Mark and reward as soon as your dog's front paws leave the ground. Repeat this several times before increasing the difficulty and the height they 'sit' before marking and rewarding.

Step Three
Gradually increase the sitting height before rewarding until your pup achieves the perfect 'sit pretty' position! You can then start using the 'sit pretty' command along with a hand signal.

Did you Know
You can use the sound setting on your e-collar as a marker for good behaviour, similar to the 'click' of a clicker!
